EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.

  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in dozens of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, following signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
