Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that costs are rising, although slowly. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
