Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, located using intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of a great many British troops deployed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate militants who threaten our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
